When the Qur’an Is Abandoned
π§ Listen to this chapter (3 min)
There is a verse in the Qur’an that should make every heart pause.
On the Day of Judgement, the Messenger will say, "O my Lord, my people took this Qur’an as something abandoned."
Ibn al-Qayyim explains that there are five kinds of abandoning the Qur’an.
The first is not listening to it, or paying it no attention. The second is reciting it and believing in it, but not acting on it. The third is not turning to it for judgement when we disagree. The fourth is not reflecting on its meanings, not trying to understand what Allah is saying to us. And the fifth is not seeking healing from it, for the illnesses of the heart, and looking for cures everywhere else.
One of the early scholars once warned, a time will come when the Qur’an will sit on the shelf, covered in dust.
And the book reminds us, in an age full of distraction, how easily this can happen. Hours on screens. Minutes for the Book of Allah.
But it is never too late to come back. Even a few verses a day, read with reflection, begin to undo the abandonment.
Which of the five kinds of abandonment do you see in yourself? Choose one, and begin to mend it today.
