A Scholar Who Wrote About Rulers
🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)
Welcome. For nearly nine hundred years, from the death of the Prophet ﷺ to the lifetime of one scholar in Cairo, the Muslim world had caliphs. Leaders who claimed to stand in the place of the Prophet ﷺ, guiding the community and protecting its faith.
Some were saints. Some were scholars. Some were great builders. And some were deeply flawed.
Five hundred years ago, the tireless scholar al-Suyuti set out to tell all their stories in a single book. He called it The History of the Caliphs.
He did not write to flatter rulers. In fact, al-Suyuti was known for keeping his distance from the powerful. It is reported that when sultans sent him gifts, he would return them.
He wrote so that people could learn. What makes a leader good? What happens when power forgets God?
In this summary, we will walk through the centuries with al-Suyuti, pausing at a few rulers whose stories still speak to us today. Crowns, and the consciences beneath them.
