1. A Ledger of Debtors

Allah's guarantee of provision is more reliable than any list of honest debtors; anxiety is the gap between our wishes and His choice.

2. A Mirror Facing the Sun

A heart cleared of desire, turned toward Allah, fills with the light of certainty.

3. Not Forbidding the Lawful

Disciplining desire is training, not forbidding what is lawful; blessings are for grateful enjoyment.

Why You Were Made

Welcome. More than a thousand years ago, in the city of Tirmidh, in Central Asia, there lived a scholar known simply as al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi. The sage of Tirmidh.

He wrote about the inner life with rare depth. And this short book is about one task. Training the self. Weaning it, as you would wean a child.

He begins with a big question. Why did Allah create us at all?

Allah says, I created jinn and humans only to worship Me. And the scholars of language explained, to worship Him means to affirm His oneness. To know that there is no god but Him, that everything belongs to Him, and to praise Him for it.

The Prophet ﷺ said, no one loves praise more than Allah. That is why He praised Himself.

So we were made to know Him, and to speak of His beauty.

But then al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi notices something. The believer's heart truly knows Allah. It is at rest with faith. And yet he still sins. Why?

Because Allah placed desires in the self, and gave Satan a way to whisper. And when desire grows strong, the heart is not emptied of faith. It is taken captive. This book is about how to set it free.
