Welcome. How many verses are there in the Qur’an? How many words? How many letters? Which word sits exactly in the middle of the whole book?

These might sound like strange questions. Even unnecessary ones. But for early Muslims, they were questions of love and protection.

Eight hundred years ago, in Baghdad, lived one of the most famous preachers and writers in Islamic history. Ibn al-Jawzi. His sermons drew crowds of thousands. He wrote hundreds of books, on history, hadith, the heart, and the Qur’an.

Among them is a small handbook with a poetic name. Funun al-Afnan. Branches of Delight. In it, he gathered the essential facts about the Qur’an. Its virtues, its names, its revelation, and its astonishing counts of surahs, verses, words and letters.

It is a book of details. But behind every detail, there is a story of devotion.

In this summary, we will open some of these branches, and discover how carefully the Qur’an was guarded by those who loved it.
