The Sweetness of Faith

Love for Allah, the book teaches, is not an extra. It is part of faith itself.

The Prophet ﷺ said, three things, whoever has them will taste the sweetness of faith. That Allah and His Messenger are dearer to him than anything else. That he loves a person only for the sake of Allah. And that he would rather be thrown into a fire than return to disbelief.

And he said, whoever loves for Allah, and hates for Allah, gives for Allah, and withholds for Allah, has made his faith complete.

Ibn Mas'ud said, part of faith is that a man loves another man with no close family between them, no money he has received from him, nothing at all, except Allah. And he explained a verse about such friends. Allah said to His Prophet, had you spent everything on earth, you could not have joined their hearts. But Allah joined them.

Someone once asked Umm al-Darda', the wise wife of a Companion, which of your deeds do you trust most? She said, love for the sake of Allah.

And when a man told the scholar Qatadah, I love you for Allah, he replied, then it is your Lord that you have loved.
