A Question About the Mind
🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)
Welcome. Someone once asked al-Muhasibi a simple question. What is the intellect?
We use the word all the time. A clever man. A sensible woman. Someone who has lost his mind. But what is it, really? And why does the Qur'an keep asking us, again and again, will you not use your reason?
al-Muhasibi was born in Basra, and lived in Baghdad, more than eleven hundred years ago. He was the scholar known for holding himself to account. And his answer to this question is short, careful, and surprising.
He says the word has three meanings. The first is the thing itself. A gift placed in us at birth. The second is understanding. Grasping what we see and hear. And the third, the one that matters most, is a kind of insight. Seeing the true worth of things. Above all, the worth of Allah.
By the end of this short book, you may find that you have been calling people intelligent who are not, and overlooking people who are.
So let us begin with the first meaning.
