The Entry Into Medina

🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) set foot on the oasis of Quba, the residents were overcome with joy. The date was September 27, AD 622. During his short stay of three days there, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instigated the establishment of the first Mosque in the history of Islam. He left for Medina on Friday with Abu Bakr (RA). Before arriving at their ultimate destination, they made another quick stop in the valley of Ranunan, where they performed the first Friday prayer.

The Holy Prophet finally made it to Medina, and when the people there laid their eyes on him, their happiness and gratification were immeasurable. Everyone wanted their beloved Prophet to stay and rest in their house, and invitations from all the inhabitants of Medina came to him, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left the decision to his Qaswa, his camel. After walking for a while, Qaswa stood still in a courtyard that was owned by two young lads, Sahl and Suhayl. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) decided to stay with the young orphans, and even though the brothers were delighted to host him, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) insisted on paying them for his stay. Medina was the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)’s new home and was the start of a new venture for him.

Modern Context: The "Friendship Discount"

We often expect free favors or discounts from friends, exploiting brotherhood for financial gain. The Prophet refused the orphans’ gift, insisting on paying them. True character means protecting rights, not using connections to save money.

Practical Step: The ‘Full Price’ Standard

The Action: Next time you buy from a friend or community member, refuse the discount. Pay the full price. Support them with your wallet, not just your praise.

Modern Context: The Hospitality We guard our personal space and resources. The Ansar shared everything with the Muhajirun. True brotherhood is sharing your wealth, not just your memes.

Practical Step: The ‘Guest’ Honor

The Action: Invite someone over for tea or dinner this week. Honor your guest; it’s a part of faith.
