A Letter to a Student
🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)
Welcome. Imagine you are a student, seven hundred years ago, in the city of Damascus. You love the Qur’an. You want to understand it. But every commentary you open says something different. Some explain a verse one way. Others explain it in a completely different way. Some are full of strange stories. Some seem to bend the verses to fit a particular school of thought.
Who should you trust? How do you know when an explanation is sound?
A student once asked exactly this question of one of the most brilliant and controversial scholars of his age, Ibn Taymiyyah.
His answer was a short treatise. Only a few dozen pages. He called it An Introduction to the Principles of Tafsir.
It has become one of the most studied texts on how to understand the Qur’an. Students across the world still read it today, often before they open any large commentary.
In this summary, we will walk through his rules, one by one. Rules that can help any reader approach the Qur’an with both confidence and humility.
