Increase Your Eman
🎧 Listen to this chapter (24 min)
To develop a Muslim mindset, the most important step is to have faith in Allah-this is called eman. Both our life in this world and our life after death depend on our eman.
Our eman directly affects what happens in our lives now and in the hereafter. If we want good outcomes for ourselves, our families, and our communities, we need to work on increasing and strengthening our eman. We can do this by practicing Islamic teachings, such as seeking knowledge, performing our prayers, reading the Qur’an, remembering death, and always keeping Allah in our thoughts. When our eman is strong, and we feel deeply connected to Allah, our mindset will naturally shift toward positivity and optimism.
But what is eman? Scholars explain that eman is the action of the heart. It starts with believing in Allah in your heart, then expressing this belief with your words, and finally, acting on it through your deeds.
Here’s what eman involves:
1.Believing in Allah: This means knowing that there is only one Creator without any partners. He is always watching over us, guiding us, and providing for us. He is the one who gives life and takes it away. Our final return is to Allah.
2. Believing in the Angels: Angels are noble servants of Allah who never disobey Him. They are created from light, and they do not eat, drink, or have human characteristics like gender or giving birth. Only Allah knows how many angels there are.
3. Believing in the Scriptures: Allah sent various books to guide us. These include the scrolls given to Ibrahim, the Psalms given to Dawood, the Torah given to Musa, the New Testament given to Esa, and the Qur’an given to Muhammad, peace be upon them all.
4. Believing in the Prophets: We must believe in all the messengers and prophets that Allah sent to guide us back to Him.
5. Believing in the Day of Judgment: This is the day when we will be resurrected and asked about our deeds.
6. Believing in Free Will and Predestination: Allah has given us the ability to make choices (free will), and some things in our life are preordained, like who our parents are.
All these aspects of eman involve the heart, the words we say, and the actions we take. Strengthening our eman in these ways helps us build a strong Muslim mindset.
Having faith in Allah is incredibly powerful and important. Even if someone is starving or going through terrible suffering, their faith in Allah can stay strong. As Muslims, knowing that Allah exists helps us trust Him, even when we face problems that might otherwise make us feel worried, anxious, or depressed. We understand that Allah is the one who takes away our pain and heals our hearts, so we remain patient until His help reaches us.
However, it’s important to understand that feeling pain as Muslims doesn’t mean we are indifferent to it. We do experience pain, hardships, uncertainty, grief, and even depression. Going through these feelings doesn’t make us less of a Muslim or mean our faith is weak. Many prophets, their companions, and pious people from the past went through pain and suffering. For example, Prophet Ayoub (Job), peace be upon him, suffered for eighteen years with loss and disease, but his faith in Allah never weakened.
Pain, adversity, and suffering are a natural part of life. It’s normal to feel these emotions. What helps us endure them is our faith in Allah and our trust in Him. Knowing who Allah is and understanding His nature is vital to our lives. As believers, our main purpose is to know Allah and worship Him. This is the most important thing in life.
This too is a mindset—one that you can develop. With such a mindset, you can live a life so strong and confident that even if the sky were to fall apart, you wouldn’t be shaken. This strength comes from believing in the existence of Allah and knowing that He is always there to protect us.
Seek knowledge.
The first step to strengthening our faith (eman) is to learn about who Allah is and what He wants from us. We believe in Allah and want to worship Him, but many of us may not know how to do this properly. This is why seeking knowledge is so important. When we learn more about Allah and our religion, we get closer to Him and our faith becomes stronger.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said, "To seek sacred knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim." This means that every Muslim needs to learn enough about their religion to know how to worship Allah correctly and fulfill their religious duties. Another saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him, teaches us that if Allah wants good for someone, He gives them understanding of the religion. This means that when people are guided to seek knowledge, it’s a sign that Allah is helping them to understand Islam better.
We should regularly pray to Allah to help us understand our religion and gain more knowledge. If we ask sincerely, Allah will guide us and give us the knowledge we need, sometimes in ways we might not expect. However, it’s important to make sure that we learn from the right sources and people who teach true and reliable knowledge about Islam. To strengthen your faith, it’s important to learn about Islam from trusted sources. Here’s how you can do that:
1.Find a Local Scholar: Look for an experienced scholar or teacher in your community. Ask about Islamic classes at your local masjid (mosque).
2.Online Options: If you don’t have a masjid nearby, you can ask your local masjid’s leadership or imam about online classes. My family used to have a sheikh call us on the phone for lessons, and we invited others to join too.
3.Free Online Classes: There are websites like Seeker’s Hub, run by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, which offer free Islamic classes. Check with local scholars for other reliable online resources.
Fulfill the Obligatory Acts.
To strengthen your faith and have a positive mindset, it’s important to follow Allah’s commands as best as you can. This means doing the required actions, like the five daily prayers. If we don’t do these things, it’s hard to feel good and connected to Allah.
Make sure you perform the five daily prayers on time and with focus. Try to be sincere and really concentrate during your prayers. It can be hard to stay focused or feel a connection to Allah. One story tells of a man who prayed for twenty years without feeling anything special. But he kept praying, and after another twenty years, he began to feel the sweetness and connection in his prayers. Allah wants us to do our best, even if it’s difficult. Keep up with the commandments and strive to be sincere in your prayers. Allah will help and make things easier if you put in the effort first. The goal is to keep fulfilling Allah’s commandments, even if it’s challenging. Allah will respond and make things easier for you if you try your best.
We shouldn’t expect Allah to instantly change our prayers and our lives overnight, even though He could if He wanted to. Life is a journey, and we need to keep practicing Allah’s commands regularly and sincerely. Just like the man who prayed for many years before feeling a deep connection, we too can find joy and peace in our prayers and other acts of worship over time.
When we pray sincerely and with focus, we often feel better throughout the day. This feeling of calm and satisfaction is a gift from Allah and shows that we are doing our prayers well.
Prayer is very important. It helps us avoid bad behavior, strengthens our faith, and supports our overall well-being. If you’re facing difficulties, it’s good to look at how you’re performing your prayers and try to improve them. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, would turn to prayer when facing problems. Prayer connects us directly to Allah and helps us deal with life’s challenges.
To strengthen your faith and connection with Allah, it’s important to do the required acts of worship. This includes giving zakat if you can, fasting during Ramadan, and going to Hajj if you’re able. These actions are very special to Allah, along with believing in Him and His final messenger, Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
For Muslim women, wearing the hijab (head covering) is also very important. If a woman shows her hair to someone who isn’t allowed to see it, she is doing something wrong. This can take away blessings from her life. It’s important to follow these main commandments first before focusing on extra good deeds. Some women might hesitate to wear the hijab because they feel they aren’t pious enough. They might think that if their actions don’t match their appearance, they’re being fake. But this is a misunderstanding. Allah doesn’t expect us to be perfect before following His commands. He knows we’re not perfect, but He still asks us to wear the hijab and follow His rules.
If you’re having trouble with wearing the hijab or want to learn more about it, talk to the scholars in your community. They can offer helpful advice and encouragement. Following Allah’s commands, like wearing the hijab, brings us closer to Him and helps us live a better life. The hijab is a special way for Muslim women to show their faith and keep themselves safe and honored. It sets them apart from non-Muslims and is a way to earn Allah’s pleasure.
Similarly, having a beard is important for Muslim men. Even though some non-Muslim men are growing beards now because it’s a trend, having a beard still helps Muslims be recognized and show their faith. It’s something to be proud of.
Wearing the hijab and behaving well are important because they help keep us away from sins. Sins can take away the blessings in our lives and make us feel unhappy or negative. By following Allah’s commands and avoiding sins, we can fill our lives with blessings, peace, and happiness.
To have a positive and blessed life, it’s important to follow the practices of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. This means doing things like praying regularly, fasting during Ramadan, giving charity (zakat), going to Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca), and for women, wearing the hijab.
Ask Allah to help you with these practices and give you the strength to follow them without worry. By doing these things, you can live a life that is pleasing to Allah and have a positive mindset.
Recite Quran Daily
Reading the Quran every day is very important for having a positive mindset. Even just reading for fifteen minutes each day, especially during the early morning (Fajr prayer), can make you feel accomplished, happy, and full of energy. Make sure to do this regularly, as consistent small actions are very valuable to Allah. Before you start reading, do wudhu (clean yourself) and make sure your intention is to do it for Allah’s sake.
Every time you read, you earn rewards from Allah—ten rewards for each letter you read. Remember, you’re reading the words of Allah, and this practice was highly valued by the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. He said, "The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it." So, keep reading the Quran regularly to grow closer to Allah and improve your mindset. When you keep reading the Quran daily, even just a little bit, it has a special way of building up over time. This is called the compounding effect.
For example, if you start by reading the Quran for ten minutes each day, it will become easier over time. Soon, you might want to read more often, like in the evening or after prayers. You might even finish a whole section of the Quran each day.
This compounding effect can also improve other parts of your life. Reading the Quran can help you do more acts of worship, like memorizing it or fasting voluntarily. It can bring more peace and love in your family, or even help you get your work done faster.
When you read the Quran, especially early in the morning, the angels come and listen. They love hearing the Quran, so you’re never alone. This daily habit can bring many positive changes to your life. When you read the Quran every day, special blessings come to you and fill your home. These blessings help you find more time and energy to do other good things. As your home becomes filled with these blessings, your heart feels happier and more positive. This positive feeling helps you keep a good attitude and stay optimistic. So, reading the Quran regularly brings many good things to your life and makes it easier to stay positive.
Remember Death
Thinking about death can be hard and make us uncomfortable, but it’s something everyone will face. As Muslims, we believe that death is a way to meet Allah and is a special moment for believers. Even though many people try to ignore death and focus only on everyday things, it’s important to accept that death is real and prepare for it. You can ask yourself some important questions to see if you are living your life in a way you’d be proud of if you were close to the end:
– What would I do if I had one year left to live?
– What if I had only six months?
– What if I had just one day?
Think about whether you’re living your life in a way that you would be happy with at the end. If not, ask yourself why and how you can make changes. Understanding that life is short helps us focus on what really matters and prepare ourselves to meet Allah. When you think about how you want to live your life, write down your ideas. Choose the three to five most important things and start working on them right away.
When facing challenges or difficulties, imagine it’s your last day. This way, small problems won’t seem so big or important. Remembering that life is short and that Allah is always with you helps you stay calm and focused on what really matters. By thinking this way, you’ll find it easier to handle tough times, stay patient, and not feel overwhelmed. It helps you see life from a broader perspective, find peace of mind, and live with purpose. Trust that Allah is taking care of everything and wants good for you. May Allah make this journey of growth and positivity easier for us all.
Be Alone with Allah
Set aside some quiet time each day to be alone with Allah. This can be from a few minutes to an hour. Find a peaceful place, like your prayer room, where you can be free from noise and distractions.
Use this time to think about your life and the challenges you face. Ask yourself questions like:
– Are you living the life you truly want?
– Are you living the way you were meant to live?
Remember, our goal as believers isn’t just to find happiness or wealth in this life. We aim to do our best in our thoughts, actions, and character, so our deeds are pleasing to Allah. Even if we have little in this world, we can be among the richest in the hereafter if we have good hearts.
This time alone with Allah helps us seek a deeper, more meaningful connection with Him. Reflect on His mercy, greatness, and power. Allah controls everything, from the smallest things to the biggest events, and He forgives all sins. Use this time to praise Him using His beautiful names and attributes, and to praise the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. Speaking these praises will help strengthen your heart.
Remember that Allah promises to help you through every difficulty and provide for you in ways you might not expect. Allah has made it His promise to take care of us, which shows how great and caring He is. Trust Allah because He is enough for you.
During your alone time, ask Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and blessings. Pray for clarity in your life and for the best possible outcomes, even though we can’t know everything about the future. Reflect on your past days and months. Did you complete your tasks with full dedication and care? If not, think about what stopped you from doing so. Write down these obstacles and work on improving one thing at a time. Try to remove things that distract you from your worship and positive thoughts. Regularly check your progress.
Life is shaped by the choices we make. Use your quiet time to reflect on your choices and patterns. It’s a chance to break free from negativity and focus on how you want to live the rest of your life. What’s wonderful about life is that Allah will give you whatever you ask for. Think about that for a moment—Allah will provide what you desire.
If you want an easy life, or a life full of peace, health, and meaning, Allah will give it to you. So, if Allah always listens to our prayers, why not ask for the best of both this life and the next?
Some people mistakenly think we should only pray for things in the afterlife and not for this world. While praying for the hereafter is important, asking for good things in this life is also okay. Allah enjoys hearing our requests and is pleased when we ask Him.
Isn’t it interesting that asking Allah repeatedly makes Him happy, while asking people too much can annoy them? So, keep asking Allah for what you want in this life and the next, for things that are meaningful and pleasing to Him.
During your quiet time, remember Allah by doing dhikr, which means repeating phrases of praise and prayer that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, used to say. Dhikr helps you remember Allah, brings blessings, and protects you from harm. It makes your time more productive, helping you get more done and manage your time better.
To develop a Muslim mindset, you need to have strong faith in Allah. This faith, or eman, can be strengthened by:
1.Learning about Islam: Seek knowledge about Allah and how to worship Him.
2.Doing the required acts of worship: This includes praying regularly, giving charity, fasting, and going to Hajj if possible.
3.Thinking about the afterlife: Prepare for what comes after this life.
4.Reading the Quran and remembering Allah: Make these practices a daily habit.
By doing these things, you will feel closer to Allah and develop a positive, hopeful mindset that aligns with Islamic teachings. Regularly spending quiet time with Allah, even just a few minutes a day, can help you feel relieved and worry-free, making it easier to maintain this positive mindset.
