A Guide for Those Who Marry

Welcome. This is A Guide to a Good Marriage, based on a short work attributed to the great scholar of Egypt, al-Suyuti.

al-Suyuti wrote hundreds of books, on the Quran, hadith, law, language and history. And among them is this small guide, written, he says, because he saw people neglecting the etiquette of marriage, and wanted to set it out clearly and briefly.

He divides it into nine chapters. The virtue of marriage. Its benefits. Its dangers. Choosing a wife, and choosing a husband. The rights of each spouse. The wedding feast. And the arrival of children.

Like many books of its time, it gathers a great deal of material, some of it strong, and some of it weak. In this summary, we keep to its soundly sourced guidance, from the Quran, the authentic Sunnah, and the wisdom of the early Muslims.

What remains is a warm, practical picture of what a marriage can be, when it is built for the sake of Allah.

Whether you are thinking of marriage, newly married, or many years in, there is something here for you.
