A Book for Hard Times

Welcome. What do you do when everything you built starts to fall apart? When the people you trusted turn against you? When plans collapse, support disappears, and you feel completely alone?
About eight hundred and fifty years ago, a scholar from the island of Sicily, Sicily, wrote a book to answer exactly that question. His name was Ibn Zafar. He was born in Sicily at a time when the island had fallen under Norman rule, and the Muslim community there was living through enormous change.
He travelled widely, living in Makkah, in Egypt, and finally in the Syrian town of Hama, where he died, it is said, in poverty. He knew hardship not from books, but from life.
His book is called Sulwan al-Muta’, consolation for the ruler, in the face of the hostility of those he rules. He wrote it for a leader who was facing rebellion and betrayal. But its lessons are for anyone who has ever been let down, attacked, or overwhelmed.
He offers five consolations, five medicines for a troubled heart. Entrusting your affairs to Allah. Finding comfort in the example of others. Patience. Contentment. And renunciation. And he teaches each one through the Qur’an, the words of the wise, and stories of kings and animals.
