A Notebook of Treasures
🎧 Listen to this chapter (3 min)
Welcome. Imagine finding the private notebook of one of the wisest people who ever lived. Not a polished book, but the thoughts he wrote down as they came to him. A line here. A reflection there. Something he noticed in a verse, or in his own heart.
That is what this book is. It was written by the great scholar Ibn al-Qayyim, about seven hundred years ago, and it is simply called Al-Fawa’id, Beneficial Points.
There is no strict order to it. It moves from the Qur’an to the heart, from time to sin, from this world to the next. And that is part of its beauty. You can open it anywhere, and find something that speaks to you.
He begins with advice on how to benefit from the Qur’an. If you want to benefit from it, gather your heart when you recite it or hear it. Listen carefully, and be present, as someone being spoken to directly by the One who sent it.
He points to a verse: in this is a reminder for whoever has a heart, or listens while being present.
A living heart. A listening ear. A present mind. When all three come together, he says, the Qur’an does its work.
So let us gather our hearts, and open the notebook.
