A Doctor for the Soul

Welcome. When your body is sick, you know what to do. You see a doctor. You take medicine. But what do you do when the sickness is inside? When it is envy that eats at you, anger that explodes, worry that keeps you awake, or laziness that steals your days?
Eight hundred years ago, a great scholar of Baghdad asked the same question. His name was Ibn al-Jawzi. He was one of the most famous preachers in the history of Islam. It is said that tens of thousands came to hear him, and that he wrote hundreds of books.
He had just finished writing a book on medicine for the body. And then he thought: the body is not enough. So he wrote a second book and called it al-Tibb al-Ruhani, Spiritual Medicine. Medicine for the body, he said, repairs the outer form. Medicine for the soul repairs the inner meaning. And that is nobler.
He begins with a simple principle. Everything Allah placed inside a human being was placed there for his benefit. Appetite, to bring him food. Anger, to protect him from harm. But when appetite goes beyond its limit, it becomes greed. And when anger goes beyond its limit, it becomes destruction.
The disease is not in having these things. It is in their excess. And this book, in thirty short chapters, is a prescription for bringing each one back into balance.
