1. Three Things in Every State

In every situation the believer has a command to obey, a prohibition to avoid, or a decree to accept with contentment. Why Them and Not Me?: Allah’s giving and withholding are both wisdom; blessings can be tests and hardships can be gifts.

2. Let Go of Your Own Will

Peace comes from surrendering one’s own will to Allah’s and not complaining to people.

Follow, and Do Not Invent

🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)

Abd al-Qadir is very firm about one thing. Everything must be measured by the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

He says: follow, and do not invent. Obey, and do not go out of line. Be humble, and do not twist things. Whatever is enough for you, the Book and the Sunnah have already given it.

He warns about people who claim special experiences, dreams, or inner feelings, and use them to excuse leaving the clear rules of the religion. Any inner state, he says, that the Shariah does not bear witness to, is a deception.

Think about how strong that is, coming from a man who was famous for spirituality. He is saying: the heart is precious, but the heart can be fooled. Feelings come and go. The Book of Allah and the way of the Prophet ﷺ stay the same.

So when your heart tells you something, check it. When your desires tell you something, check it. Even when people you admire tell you something, check it.

The Book and the Sunnah are the two wings, he says, that carry a person to Allah. Without them, no one can fly.
