Antipathy Towards Death

🎧 Listen to this chapter (4 min)

People often don’t like to think about death. They get upset when it’s mentioned because they love this life so much. They forget that everyone will die someday, and they focus too much on enjoying the world right now. Say, ‘The death you are running away from will inevitably come to you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the seen and unseen, and He will inform you of what you used to do"’ (AI-Jumu’ah 62:8]

It’s normal to be afraid of death. People often do things to protect themselves from it. For example, the prophet Abraham AS was scared when visitors came because he thought they might harm him. This shows that even strong people can be afraid of dying. You’re really scared of death and don’t want to talk about it. You don’t believe in life after death or being punished or rewarded for your actions. When someone close dies, you find it very hard to move on and often get stuck in sadness. You don’t think about death as something real or important, and you focus on enjoying life now without worrying about what happens after. REFERENCE [AI-Jumu’ah 62-8), [Muhammad 47 12). You accept what God decides. You believe that death is a good thing for believers because it means leaving a difficult life for a peaceful one. You understand that losing loved ones is hard, but people who believe in Allah SWT can handle it better because they believe in life after death. Thinking about death helps you live a better life. It makes you work hard to do good things because you know life is short. You focus on being a good person and doing the right things. You often check your actions to make sure you’re on the right path. This helps you be happy and not greedy. REFER TO [Al-Kahf 1846]. A man from the Ansar asked, o Prophet of Allah! Who are the wisest and most honoured of people?" The Prophet (PBUH) answered, "Those who remember death most and prepare for it before it arrives. They are the wise and pass away with the honour of this world and the dignity of the next." [AI-Muj’am As-Saghir At- Tabrani1008].

You’re scared of dying because you worry about being punished by Allah (SWT). This fear makes you try to be a good person and do good things all the time. You want to avoid Allah’s (SWT) anger by doing what’s right. o believers Be mindful Allah and let every soul look to what (deeds) 1t has sent forth for tomorrow and fear Allah (for) certainly Allah, s All-Aware of what you do" [AI-Hashr 59 18].
