Life Is a Journey

Welcome. This is the tenth book of The Revival of the Religious Sciences, by Imam al-Ghazali. It is about ordering your day and night, so that every hour carries you closer to Allah.

Allah made the earth easy for His servants, says al-Ghazali, not so that they would settle in it, but so that they would take from it provision for a journey.

People in this world are travellers. The first station is the cradle. The last station is the grave. And the homeland is either Paradise, or the Fire.

Your life is the distance. Your years are its stages. Your days are its miles, and your breaths are your steps.

Your obedience is your merchandise. Your time is your capital. Your desires are the bandits on the road. And your profit is meeting Allah in the Home of Peace.

So whoever lets a single breath pass in something that does not bring him nearer, says al-Ghazali, will feel a regret on the Day of Loss that has no end.

That is why the wise took their remaining years seriously. They gave each part of the day and night its own devotion.

In this book, we will see why that order matters, how to fill each part of the day, how to revive the night, and how each person can find the way that suits him.
