A Book About the Last Hour

Welcome. More than eleven hundred years ago, in the city of Baghdad, there lived a scholar who taught the sons of caliphs. His name was Ibn Abi al-Dunya.

He spent his life collecting reports. What the Prophet ﷺ said. What his Companions did. What the worshippers of the early generations said and felt.

And one of his books gathers only one moment. The moment of death. Hundreds of short reports, about what people said when they knew they were leaving this world.

There are Companions here, and scholars, and caliphs, and kings. There are poets, and young men who wasted their lives. Some died smiling. Some died weeping. Some could not speak at all.

Why would anyone collect such things? Because the last hour is a mirror. Whatever a person truly loved, whatever he truly feared, rises to the surface then.

And because we can still learn from it while there is time. As one of them said, at the very end, work for a resting place like this one.

So let us sit with them, at their bedsides, and listen.
