The Little Word That Keeps on Giving

🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)

Welcome. There is a word you probably say many times a day. al-hamdu lillah. All praise is for Allah.

More than eleven hundred years ago, in Baghdad, the scholar Ibn Abi al-Dunya gathered over two hundred sayings and stories about that word, and about the quality behind it. Gratitude.

He records a thought from the scholar Bakr ibn Abd Allah al-Muzani that is a little dizzying. Whenever a servant says, al-hamdu lillah, that ability to praise is itself a new blessing. And what is the thanks for that blessing? To say al-hamdu lillah again. Which is another blessing. And so the blessings of Allah never run out.

And Allah Himself made a promise. If you are grateful, I will surely give you more.

In this book, you will meet a porter who understood gratitude better than a scholar. A man with a painful sore who found three reasons to give thanks for it. And a king who envied a servant boy drinking water.

By the end, you may never say al-hamdu lillah in quite the same way again.

So let us begin.
