A Letter to My Brother
🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)
Welcome. More than eleven hundred years ago, in the city of Baghdad, there lived a quiet scholar whom people called al-Muhasibi. The one who holds himself to account.
He earned that name because of one habit. Before every word, before every deed, he would stop, and ask his own heart a question. Why are you doing this? And for whom?
This book is a collection of his counsels. It reads like a letter, written to a brother he loved. Again and again he says, my brother, look at your heart.
He begins with a short list. Fear Allah like someone who knows how near He is. Trust Him like someone whose heart has stopped trembling over His promise. Thank Him like someone who has counted His gifts. And be shy before Him, like someone who knows how little he has given back.
Everything else in this book is an explanation of that list. How to make it real. And how the soul quietly tries to fake it.
So let us sit with him, and listen.
