Think of the Day of Resurrection

🎧 Listen to this chapter (3 min)

My brothers, says Ibn al-Jawzi, think about the gathering, and the return.

On that Day, there will be regrets. At the gathering, sighs. At the bridge, stumbles. At the scale, tears. Injustice that day will be darkness upon darkness. And the books will record even glances.

One group will climb the levels of the Garden. Another will sink into the Fire. And between you and all of this, there is nothing but someone saying, so-and-so has died.

People will sweat on that Day, the Prophet ﷺ said, until their sweat sinks seventy arm lengths into the earth, and rises to their ears.

Then the bridge is laid over Hell. Slippery. Lined with hooks and thorns. The believers cross it, some like the blink of an eye, some like lightning, some like the wind, some like the swiftest horses. Some pass safely. Some pass scratched. And the last of them is dragged across.

Ata' al-Sulami was blamed for weeping so much. He said, when I remember the people of the Fire, I picture myself among them. How can a soul see its hands chained, and not weep?

Is there anything of their qualities in you, my brothers?
