Hearts Joined by Allah

Welcome. This is the fifteenth book of The Revival of the Religious Sciences, by Imam al-Ghazali. It is about friendship, brotherhood, and living well with others.
Closeness between people, says al-Ghazali, is the fruit of good character. And division is the fruit of bad character. Good character brings love and harmony. Bad character brings hatred, envy, and people turning their backs on each other.
Allah Himself counts this closeness among His greatest gifts. He told His Prophet ﷺ, had you spent everything on earth, you could not have united their hearts. But Allah united them.
And He reminded the believers, you were enemies, and He joined your hearts, and by His grace you became brothers.
The Prophet ﷺ said, the believer is friendly, and others are friendly to him. And there is no good in someone who is neither.
Loving one another for the sake of Allah, says al-Ghazali, is one of the finest ways to draw near to Him. But it has conditions, and it has rights.
In this book, we will see the reward of such love, what it truly means, whom to choose as a friend, and the eight rights every brother owes his brother, before a final word on neighbours and family.
