When Love Becomes an Illness
🎧 Listen to this chapter (2 min)
Welcome. This is the second part of The Garden of Lovers, by the great scholar of Damascus, Ibn al-Qayyim.
In part one, we explored love itself. Its names, its stages, its signs. And we saw that love, at its best, leads the heart to Allah.
But love has another side. When it attaches to the wrong thing, or grows beyond its bounds, it can become an illness. It takes over the mind. It steals sleep. It makes a person forget his faith, his family, and himself.
The Arabs called this lovesickness. And Ibn al-Qayyim treats it the way a doctor treats a disease. Where does it start? Is it a choice? And how is it cured?
He is never harsh with the one who suffers. He knows the pain is real. But he is honest about where it leads, and firm about the way out.
And he begins, as every good doctor does, with prevention. With the door through which most of this illness enters. The eye.
